Overview
Negombo exists in the shadow of the airport it sits beside, and that's exactly its appeal — a relaxed fishing town to land in or fly out from, without the drive into Colombo. Mornings belong to the fish market, one of the island's largest, where the day's catch is auctioned, gutted and laid out to dry within sight of the beach. Dutch-era canals, a handful of old churches and a long stretch of sand round out a low-key day or two.
Don't Miss
Best before 7am — auctions, drying racks and the working rhythm of a fishing town.
A boat ride through mangroves and traditional outrigger fishing boats.
One of several striking colonial-era churches in the town centre.
Better for a sunset walk than a swim — the southern beaches are calmer.
Getting There
The closest beach town to the airport — a 10–15km taxi ride. Many itineraries use it purely as a first or last-night stop to avoid a long drive straight off a flight.
