Overview

About Kandy

Sri Lanka's last royal capital sits around a small lake in the hill country, cooler and calmer than Colombo. Its centrepiece is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — Sri Dalada Maligawa — home to what's believed to be a tooth relic of the Buddha, and one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Buddhist world. Beyond the temple, Kandy is a good base for the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya and the start of the hill-country train line toward Ella.

Getting There

How to Reach Kandy

The train from Colombo is the classic route — scenic, affordable, and the seats fill up fast in high season. A private car takes roughly the same time via the A1 highway.
