Sri Lanka has three distinct beach coasts, each with its own season and character — which one is "best" really depends on when you're travelling and what you want from a beach day.
South coast: the classic choice
Mirissa, Unawatuna, Weligama and Tangalle make up Sri Lanka's most visited beach stretch, easily combined with Galle Fort and a Yala safari. Mirissa is the base for whale watching, December to April; Weligama is the go-to for learning to surf, with gentle, forgiving waves. Best season: December to March, when the coast is driest and the sea calmest — this is also peak season, so expect the highest prices and biggest crowds of the year here.
West coast: closer to the airport, quieter
Bentota and Negombo sit on the west coast, both a shorter drive from Bandaranaike International Airport than the south coast proper. Bentota specialises in water sports — jet skiing, windsurfing — thanks to the Bentota River meeting the sea, while Negombo works well as a low-key first or last night rather than a beach destination in its own right. Same season as the south coast: December to March.
East coast: the dry-season swap
Trincomalee and Arugam Bay run on the opposite season to the south and west — dry and sunny roughly April/May to September, exactly when the south coast is in its wettest stretch. Trincomalee offers calm, clear water and excellent snorkelling at Pigeon Island; Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's serious surf destination, with its famous right-hand break peaking June to September. Pairing a south-coast beach stay with an east-coast one lets a longer trip stay in beach weather almost year-round.
